Real help, from women who’ve been there.

After she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, Sandra Poulin felt like crying. And she did-for months. But they weren’t happy tears-Sandra felt worthless, could hardly sleep, and had thoughts of death. Like too many mothers around the world, Sandra had no idea that this common but baffling condition had a name: postpartum depression.

What kind of mother, people wonder, could feel depressed after having been so richly blessed with a baby? The answer: every kind, women from all walks of life, from all over the world, young and old. And here, in a unique collection, are their stories of battles with PPD, with intimate details about the symptoms, the struggles, and the strategies that helped them emerge victorious.

Written by mothers, for mothers, this collection is an uplifting, enlightening- and perhaps even lifesaving- book.

Support for Reading and Background Information

In contrast, most of the 11-15 series have chosen A5 (150 x 2iomm) and Black Cat Green Apple the even larger 167 x 24omm. Heinemann New Wave led the way in the 19805, a trend followed by all except Alinea and Scholastic.Full use has been made of the larger page, with space in the margins for glossaries and varied page layout. Unfortunately in some cases, the opportunity has been taken to put more text on a page. Penguin Active Readers is the worst offender. Its Stage 4 crams its pages with 39 i2cm long lines using a small font–most daunting.

Similarly, most have opted for full colour, with the exception of Alinea and the older Richmond Readers. Black Cat Green Apple again are outstanding. A recent development has been the use of computer-generated artwork to simulate film stills, for instance by Scholastic and Thomson. Less successful than drawings, these tend to formulaic stereotype. For this age-group, then, graded readers have abandoned the paperback ideal for a more attractive format.

With a few exceptions, editors do very little to help learners understand the text. Whether they feel it is unnecessary, patronizing, or off-putting is not clear, but given the unfavorable cultural and educational environment, their policy seems rash, even suicidal. Even when they do provide aids–most usually background notes, a list of characters, and a glossary–most do so in an unhelpful way. They are much readier to provide comprehension questions, online if not in the book. These may have the indirect effect of increasing learners’ understanding, but, without answers, probably serve rather to alienate them, especially when the questions run to several pages.

Their most serious failure is to discuss the story, characters, or theme. Perhaps they want to let the stories speak for themselves and believe that nothing should intrude upon the relationship between the learner and the text. This policy may be suitable for the accomplished student, who is familiar with literary conventions and the cultural background. Such students are, as suggested above, increasingly rare. If more are to join them, they will need help not just with the background and vocabulary but also in the form of what is called below ‘aids to appreciation’.

Not all titles need background information and certainly not simple originals at the lower levels. Classics and modern novels on the other hand cry out for information about the author and the setting of the story. Even original stories have a setting or theme that must be unfamiliar to some learners. Perhaps European students may be expected to have read similar books in their own language and to appreciate what the author is doing, but as suggested above this will apply only to a small minority. Even a PhD student from Germany assumed that Oliver Twist was contemporary. It seems even more unrealistic, even arrogant, to expect students from non-European cultures to know about the mores and history of western society.

When background information is provided, it is usually in small print, written in dense prose that is more difficult than that of the story, and in some cases even hidden at the back. This is presumably written for the teacher, not the learner, as is certainly the case with the notes provided online.

Two publishers, however, have seen the importance of presenting background information in an attractive way. CID E B make pages of background information a part of the text to be read by students, with the same layout and quality of artwork. By presenting information clearly and attractively, Black Cats widen learners’ horizons. Scholastic have turned background information into a ‘fact-file’ section that is as important as the opening story, if not more so.
