Anxiety Disorder – Do You Want To Understand More About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Are you neat? Do you like to keep everything organized, orderly and tidy? While these are great character traits in the normal course for both your work environment and your home environment, they can become confining when taken to an extreme.

If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, you take these tendencies to both an extreme and disruptive degree. If you spend so long organizing the pencils on your desk that you can´t complete the project you´re working on in a timely manner then obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD has impacted your life.

As with any anxiety disorder, the key component to a diagnosis is the disruptive impact the condition has on your life.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can manifest in many ways. Some people have to clean doorknobs or others avoid stepping on cracks in the sidewalk, check the windows and doors in the house multiple times, count or order everything they come into contact with or spend hours washing their hands, fearing they have been contaminated with germs or poisons.

For movie fans, Jack Nicholson suffered from OCD. He avoided cracks in the sidewalk, worried about germs, locked and unlocked his door a certain number of times and washed his hands until they were raw.

The impact on both your life and your physical and mental well being can be profound. At the root of obsessive-compulsive behavior is deep anxiety and often depression. It is important that you get help if you suffer from obsessions, compulsions or both.

There are two components to obsessive-compulsive disorder. The first element is obsessions. They are recurring ideas, thoughts, or images, and can range from an unshakeable feeling that you have hit someone with your car, to fear that every discoloration on your food is a poison waiting to kill you or a loved one will suffer harm if you don´t do something.

The obsessions are intrusive, unwanted and usually quite disturbing. Violent thoughts or images can continue to pop into your mind, your own death or the death of someone you love can figure prominently in your obsessions. They can also revolve around the more mundane, leaving the lights on, appliances running, doors open or the house unlocked.

Compulsions are behaviors or rituals that you undertake to reduce or eliminate the anxiety caused by your obsessions. The urges are actually a self-soothing technique. However, they can be taken to an extreme and irreparably damage your life. Things can start out small but have a snowball effect if left unaddressed.

Examples of compulsions can be checking your rearview mirror constantly or retracing your route to reassure yourself you didn´t hit someone with your car, or checking the stove over and over to make sure you didn´t leave it on.

You can have obsessions without having compulsions. Moreover obsessions often lead to depression. The thoughts can be so powerful and disturbing that not only do they cause depression but they also cause phobic avoidance. OCD sufferers who fear germs will avoid public bathrooms, touching door handles or interacting with the germ filled surfaces they so fear.

Unfortunately, if left unchecked or untreated, it is possible for the cycle of anxiousness and reactions to those feelings to spiral out of control. A fear of using public toilets can become a fear of using any toilet, even the one in your home.

Compulsion sufferers can be men or women, although the type of compulsion may vary depending on your gender. Women are more often cleaners and men are more often checkers and both can be counters. Obsessive-compulsive disorder affects both males and females relatively equally. It can crop up in childhood, early adolescence or adulthood.

Obsessive-compulsive sufferers are definitely not crazy and they certainly recognize the excessiveness and irrationality of both their obsessions and compulsions and are usually incredibly frustrated dealing with it.

Facts About Bipolar Mood Disorder

There are several facts about bipolar disorder that many people are not aware of since they have been brainwashed by false perceptions. It is sad that even those who suffer from this disorder do not know important things about the disorder which they are supposed to know so as to help them in containing it. This article will lay its focus mainly on the most important facts about bipolar disorder that are always ignored. First, bipolar disorders affect about 2% of the children and adolescents population with its prevalence going up immediately after they have reached puberty stage.

So as to avoid serious effects of bipolar disorders, early diagnosis and treatment is highly recommended for those who suffer from it. Waiting to take action in the later stages is very dangerous since one’s body and immune system is too weak to effectively confront the disorder. Adolescents suffering from bipolar disorders usually engage in aggressive activities and their behavior drastically changes mostly in a negative way. Furthermore, these adolescents are unable to notice some of the symptoms associated with the disorders therefore parents are supposed to keenly observe them so as to notice them when they show up.

Another fact about bipolar disorder that one must know is that adolescents suffering from it experience recurring symptoms that can even last for a whole day but adults have short periods of recurrent symptoms which usually last for very short periods. In addition to this, most adolescents suffering from the disorder experience feelings that are related to depression like elation thus incorrect medication can result to manic or aggression conditions. Also, bipolar disorder patients are usually rough and violent and whenever they cause a problem they are quick on blaming others over their own problems.

Bipolar disorder is considered a life-long ailment thus hospitalization does not help in any way to improve the condition of an ailing adult or adolescent patient. Studies have also revealed that most of the adolescents who suffer from this disorder is mainly due to drug and substance abuse at their early stages of life. Contrary to the belief that bipolar disorder is an adult’s ailment, most of those suffering from it are young ones under the age of 18 years thus dealing a blow to the falsehood. The most interesting fact about bipolar disorder is that many patients both adults and adolescents are ignorant of their condition and are never ready to accept that they are suffering from the disorder.

Facts About Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Article by Jesus

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD used to be seen as a very rare occurrence. This day’s it is estimated to affect 2.5%-3.5% of all adults in the United States. Millions of people throughout the world also suffer from OCD. Childhood diagnosis of OCD continues to grow over the past 10-20 years.

So you may wonder why OCD has increased so dramatically. One reason is that doctors have learned how to diagnose the condition much more accurately. Another reason is that OCD is becoming better known and people are coming forth, admitting that they have the symptoms. Other factors also contribute to the increase in OCD, including daily stresses at work and at home, among other misc factors.

One of the ways that OCD can occur, or can contribute to OCD occurring in a person is advertising. For example, let’s say you are stuck in an airport waiting for a flight. You are done reading your novel, watching a movie or playing a game and you have nothing left to do but sit idly while the time passes. You may grab a magazine or even a catalog to read that is sitting nearby. You may notice that many of the advertisements in these magazines will be centered on UV lights for disinfecting surfaces like counter tops, chairs, door knobs and more. Supposedly all you have to do is wave it over surfaces like a magic wand and millions of bacteria will be destroyed within 10 seconds.

If everyone in the world used products like these, scanning everything in their environment to kill germs and started wearing face masks and using disinfectants on everything, they may avoid getting the flu or a cold a few times, but if you avoid all germs, how will your immune system develop antibodies for them? You could be weakening your body’s defense against illnesses by decontaminating your environment.

Advertisements don’t cause OCD and traveling doesn’t cause OCD but the abundance of media attention around disinfection and germs can contribute in pushing someone towards OCD like behavior. Everyone develops obsessive or compulsive traits. There is a big difference between being obsessive and being compulsive. An obsession could be someone that is stalking a pretty girl, or someone that is obsessed with their looks. Being compulsive could be someone that cleans their house every hour or washes their hands constantly.Professionals define an obsession as unwanted thoughts, images or impulses that occur often and upset the person. A compulsion is defined as various actions or rituals that a person will conduct to reduce the feelings of distress caused by obsessions.

You can see obsessions and compulsions in a lot of places. For instance, many athletes have a lucky ritual they perform before every game, such as wearing dirty socks or underwear. Everyone has little obsessions and compulsions like these, but when they start to take up considerable amounts of time and start lowering the quality of your life, it’s seen as OCD.

Treating OCD can be very difficult. These habits are so familiar and built into people’s brains that it can take a very long time to stop doing them. With the help of a professional, support of your friends and family, you can overcome OCD if you keep at it and don’t give up.
