Obsessive-compulsive disorder can manifest in many ways. There are two components to obsessive-compulsive disorder. The first element is obsessions. They are recurring ideas, thoughts, or images, and can range from an unshakeable feeling that you have hit someone with your car, to fear that every discoloration on your food is a poison waiting to kill you or a loved one will suffer harm if you don´t do something. 

The obsessions are intrusive, unwanted and usually quite disturbing. Violent thoughts or images can continue to pop into your mind, your own death or the death of someone you love can figure prominently in your obsessions. They can also revolve around the more mundane, leaving the lights on, appliances running, doors open or the house unlocked. 

Compulsions are behaviors or rituals that you undertake to reduce or eliminate the anxiety caused by your obsessions. The urges are actually a self-soothing technique. However, they can be taken to an extreme and irreparably damage your life. Things can start out small but have a snowball effect if left unaddressed.   

Examples of compulsions can be checking your rearview mirror constantly or retracing your route to reassure yourself you didn´t hit someone with your car, or checking the stove over and over to make sure you didn´t leave it on.

You can have obsessions without having compulsions. Moreover obsessions often lead to depression. The thoughts can be so powerful and disturbing that not only do they cause depression but they also cause phobic avoidance. OCD sufferers who fear germs will avoid public bathrooms, touching door handles or interacting with the germ filled surfaces they so fear.

Unfortunately, if left unchecked or untreated, it is possible for the cycle of anxiousness and reactions to those feelings to spiral out of control. A fear of using public toilets can become a fear of using any toilet, even the one in your home.

Compulsion sufferers can be men or women, although the type of compulsion may vary depending on your gender. Women are more often cleaners and men are more often checkers and both can be counters. Obsessive-compulsive disorder affects both males and females relatively equally. It can crop up in childhood, early adolescence or adulthood. 

Obsessive-compulsive sufferers are definitely not crazy and they certainly recognize the excessiveness and irrationality of both their obsessions and compulsions and are usually incredibly frustrated dealing with it.

Divine Intervention in Attempted Suicide

“I need help!” The voice on the other end of the phone line sounded weak, groggy and frightenedit took a few seconds to figure out who was speaking. It was “Mary,” a new friend. “Where are you, Mary?” I could tell that something was seriously wrong. “I’m in the General Hospital. Can you come and help me?”

As soon as I was able to leave the house, I drove to the hospitalall the while wondering: “Why did she ask for me? We hardly know each other.”

I found Mary lying in a hospital bed that was totally disheveleddried vomit was obvious by appearance and smell. Her hair was wild and matted with more vomit. Her mascara had obviously smeared across the pillow. She was pale — very pale — and shaky.

“What has happened? Why are you here?” I asked.

“I tried to kill myself,” she replied. “And everyone is angry with me. The nurses have not helped me comb my hair, or wash my face even.”

“Tell me about it,” I invited while I opened her nightstand and found the basin, soap and a washrag. I filled it wit warm water, then sat on her bed and began gently wiping the tears from her face.

“Roger and I split up,” she began. “He had the kids this weekend and I was so depressed I took a whole bottle of sleeping pills. I wanted to die.”

Considering the fact that Mary was barely five feet tall and weighed may be 95 pounds, I wondered if she had really ingested a full bottle of pills.

“How many did you take?” I asked softly.

“I’m not sure. They told me they found 34 pills undigested when they pumped my stomach.”

“Oh, then someone found you right away?” I was being quite logical.

“No, actually, that’s why I called you. I was not found until my husband brought the children home48 hours after I had swallowed the pills.”

I was quiet for a few minutes as I took it all in. Rationally, that was not possible. Yet here she was alive, although a bit rough looking.

Her next comment really surprised me. “I thought of you right away. Remember the day you came to my house and told me that God loves me?” I nodded my head. “Well, my husband and I had a good laugh at you. We thought you were a ‘nut-job’ for doing that. But when I came to from having my stomach pumped, you and your words where flooding my mind. That’s why I called you.”

I had finished bathing her face, neck, chest and arms. I could not find a hair brush, so I took the comb from my purse and began gently combing her hair.

“Do you believe me now?” I asked kindly.

“Well, someone must love me. I should have died and well — here I am alive.”

Mary did live. In a few months she and her husband re-married and the last I heard they were expecting child number six!

As I reflect on this entire event, I can now see how Mary’s soul had reached out to my soul when we first met. With my mind, I thought we had become friends because we were both doctor’s wives with five children. Our family similarity had created a little “bond” between us. At that time, I was a little “missionary”full of faith in God and eager to share my faith with anyone who would listen. I had not yet learned the “golden rule” which states: “If they haven’t asked the question, they don’t want to hear the answer.”

At the same time I was full of zeal, I was also paying attention to little “Spirit nudges”those soft, gentle nudges to do something that wasn’t on my agenda for the day. Sometimes the nudge would be to phone someone and encourage or just listen to them. At other times the nudge would be stronger and I would stop in the middle of doing the dishes and go see that person. It was just such a nudge from Spirit that prompted me to visit Mary that day. Of course, my rational mind needed an excuse to visit her and the most important message of God’s love was primary in my heart. So she got the whole speech! When I left her house that day, I simply turned it over to Spirit and did not worry about how well she received that “good news.” I had done my part. And now, Spirit had done its part in demonstrating God’s love to her and keeping her alive.

You may be wondering what this story has to do with the Law of Attraction. Actually, it has everything to do with the Law of Attraction on a deep soul level. When we first learn about the Law of Attraction, we become aware of how it workswe become conscious of it and we start monitoring our thoughts. That’s a beginner’s awareness: “LOA 101.” Now, we are growing and evolving in our understanding that something inside us is a very powerful magnet and it is drawing to us situations which bypass our conscious mind.

This powerful magnet is our soul. Our subconscious mind is very connected to our soul. And our soul has a direct line of communication to our “supra-conscious mind” or Divine Mind. Our souls communicate with one another in ways our minds cannot grasp. It is very non-linear and on a very high level of consciousness that is wordlesspure vibration.

You don’t have to be a guru meditating on a mountain top for hours every day to recognize your soul’s messages to you. Just pay attention to those little “nudges,” little “inklings,” little “hunches”remember your soul needs your body to cooperate even though it does not make rational sense. You don’t have to understand it; you just have to respond to the ‘nudge.’

You may not realize how many people are alive today, because you followed that nudge and spoke kindly, bought them a meal or simply said a prayer for them. It could be the person standing in front of you at the bank has thoughts of suicide, yet their soul timed it so your soul would stand in close proximity.

Your soul is Life! Will you acknowledge your soul and choose to honor it to the best of your ability? Nothing more is required.

Bipolar Disorder – An Abnormal Mood Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder characterised by abnormal mood states. More accurately it involves cycling between the high mood state of mania to the incredibly low state of depression. Bipolar disorder affects at least one in every 70 people, greatly impeding the sufferer’s ability to live a normal life, and putting them at a higher risk of personal, relationship and work related issues.

In order to understand this disorder correctly, a discussion about how we actually define mood or abnormality of mood is in order. Our moods include the obvious states of happiness and sadness, but also optimism, pessimism, contentedness or dissatisfaction and they can even cover physical states such as how fatigued one can feel. You could say that mood is like an emotional barometer a set of feelings that expresses our sense of emotional comfort or discomfort.

Generally speaking everyone’s moods vary within a certain range from day to day, people are not constantly in one state or the other and it is quite normal for people to have ups and downs of mood. So what is the difference between these regular ups and downs in mood and the moods of a bipolar disorder sufferer? Do they simply have higher ups and lower downs?

Well yes, in a certain way this is correct. A bipolar sufferers’ moods quite often are so outside the range of normal that it doesn’t take a psychologist to know something is wrong. They can swing from mood to mood like a monkey swings from a tree at a rate that is almost impossible to keep up with and that doesn’t make any rational sense. Therefore, the symptoms of bipolar disorder seem to be caused more by a defect in the brains regulation of mood.

So for what is essentially a biological condition, the effects are felt both physically and psychologically. Bipolar disorder is accompanied by a range of symptoms that affect not only mood but energy levels, memory, cognitive ability and ones ability to relate and connect to the people around them. Physically one suffers sleep impairments, energy surges or lack thereof, appetite changes and concentration difficulties. Psychologically one might experience changes in thoughts, feelings, choices and actions. As the symptoms are cyclic in nature a sufferer can be left feeling as if they are always losing ground and never quite able to get a handle on their life.

As such the prognosis for bipolar disorder can seem quite dim, however it does not have to be that way. With greater understanding of this disorder and improved medical options over the past 30 years, fortunately today there is much hope for the bipolar sufferer. Through better understanding and management techniques combined with medications such as lithium a bipolar suffer can control the cycling moods and triggers for mania and depression so that one can live an enjoyable life.

Of the treatments necessary for sufferers of bipolar disorder, non is more important than self management strategies. By developing the ability to recognise the triggers and adjusting your life accordingly, a bipolar suffer can lessen the onset and severity of manic and depressive episodes.

 

The most beneficial self management strategies include:

1. Sleep wake monitoring

2. Staying on a regular daily and nightly routine

3. Keeping a mood chart

A mood chart is really helpful in creating a structure for recognising daily changes in moods and emotions and how these changes are related to sleeping patterns, medications and stressful life events.

4. Developing a list of early warning signs is also beneficial to signalling an oncoming episode

 

The key to recovery is to achieve stability of mood. And what do we mean by stability of mood? Stability doesn’t mean you don’t have highs and lows. As we discussed earlier, having high and lows are quite normal. What it does means is that your mood needs to make sense to you and be in synch with what is happening in your life. You should be able to live your life with confidence that you can tolerate stress, and when your mood is affected by something either you get upset or excited, you can regain your balance reasonably quickly.
